What are the Different Types of Assault Charges?

In Arizona there are misdemeanor assaults and felony assaults. Felony charges arise when a person is accused of committing a misdemeanor assault, but they use a dangerous instrument or a deadly weapon or cause serious physical injury in committing the misdemeanor assault.

There are three levels of misdemeanor assault:

• A1 Assault: intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causing an injury to another person
• A2 Assault, intentionally placing another person in reasonable apprehension of injury
• A3 Assault, touching another person with the intent to injure insult or provoke that person

How does a Misdemeanor Assault become a Felony Assault?

A misdemeanor assault will be charged as a felony assault if it is committed with a deadly weapon, dangerous instrument or resulted in a serious physical injury.
